deCoubertin Books to publish On the Brink

Posted by

A vivid and wise portrayal of football. For all the money washing around the sport, it is an incredibly fragile one, and this book reflects that, by travelling from the top table to the coal face. North West England provides a superb microcosm. This is reportage at its very best.' - Ian Herbert, Daily Mail

As the days became shorter and the nights darker, during the winter of the 2016/17 English season, Simon Hughes began a journey through the country’s most successful football region.

On the Brink is an examination of how globalisation is shifting landscape: how geography explains the way things are; how industry defines identity; how money threatens existence; what the game of football really does to people. From the Premier League to grassroots, Hughes met the individuals at the core of the game; those able to explain how and why trends and moods are shifting.

Featuring interviews with Jürgen Klopp, Sean Dyche, Gary Neville and many other managers, players, owners, chairmen, directors and politicians, On the Brink studies the modern position of the north-west’s professional clubs, slipping into the semi-professional ranks and amateur levels.

Part social examination, part travelogue, Hughes rediscovers and laces together some of the personalities and moments that have helped define football history.

In conjunction with the release of On the Brink, publisher deCoubertin will showcase Alex Baillie’s exclusive photography and this gallery will focus on passages about Merseyside football. The clubs covered here include Liverpool, Everton, City of Liverpool, Tranmere Rovers and Home Bargains FC.

From Friday 8 September until the end of the month, Alex’s work will be available to see at the Baltic Creative building in Liverpool. Opening hours: 8.30am – 6pm.

On the Brink is released Thursday 7th September. Order here
