deCoubertin team up with Book Aid International

Posted

Here at deCoubertin Books we believe that working with good causes is something that should be inherent in every business, no matter what its size. In the past we have worked with many charities close to our authors’ hearts, including Everton in the Community, the Everton Former Players Foundation and Stick N’ Step.

On this occasion we are working with Book Aid International by donating brand new books to support their partner libraries in sub-Saharan Africa. The charity believes everyone should have the chance to read in order to shape their own futures and it’s a message we couldn’t agree more with.

Football is by far the most popular sport on the planet and the passion for the game burns more brightly in Africa than perhaps on any other continent. In 2014, a report showed that in Nigeria – Africa’s largest economy – an incredible 83% of the nation are interested in the game, a higher percentage than any other nation in the world!

In turn, Africa have produced some of the best players in the modern game, from George Weah (Liberia) to Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast) to Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon). African countries have also provided us with some of the great World Cup moments: think Roger Milla’s dance at Italia ’90 for Cameroon, Senegal’s shock win over France in 2002 and the whole tournament in South Africa in 2010.

That passion and talent will undoubtedly continue to flourish in years to come and we hope that one of the many ways a child will be introduced to the game is through the written word. Book Aid International will therefore be sending copies of The World Cup: The Complete History and England Expects: A History of the England Football Team to African libraries for football enthusiasts to enjoy. A footballing education can come in many different forms.
