England Expects

£12.99 (You save £1.94)

‘The uniqueness of James Corbett is his ability to bring a grown-up approach and his current affairs background to bring the story of football alive. He did it with Everton and he's done it in this book on his second favourite team.' — James Macintyre, New Statesman

‘So Corbett’s [England Expects] concentrated on players and audience as much as managers, and in sharp, clean prose avoided all the usual laddish clichés, was extremely welcome’ More Than Mind Games

    Paperback. Pages: 624. Size: 198x129mm. ISBN: 978-0-956431-30-1. Publication: 2010.

Fully revised and updated for the 2010 World Cup Finals, England Expects is the definitive history of the England Football team. From the inaugural international matches in the mid-nineteenth century to the advent of Fabio Capello’s reign, it is an engrossing and graphic narrative history of the inside stories, dramas and shattered dreams of our nation’s footballers.

The second edition of England Expects is completely revised to include a new introduction, a new chapter detailing all the agonies of the 2006 World Cup and the contrasting fortunes of England’s managers since then.

James Corbett is a sports correspondent and award-winning author who writes about football for publications including The Blizzard, FourFourTwo, World Soccer and contributes to the BBC World Service’s World Football programme. He worked with Neville Southall and Howard Kendall on their autobiographies and his Everton Encyclopedia was published to acclaim in autumn 2012. In 2017, his oral history of Everton, Faith of our Families, was a commercial and critical success. He is the founder and principal of deCoubertin Books. @james_corbett
